The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station project
The Hinkley Point C nuclear power station project in Somerset is widely considered the largest construction site in the UK, and is even described as Europe's largest construction project. It will consist of two EPR (European Pressurised Reactor) units, with a combined capacity of 3.2 gigawatts (GW)—enough to power approximately 6 million homes. The project is expected to employ around 25,000 workers over its construction period, including up to 1,000 apprentices. The total estimated cost of the project is approximately £32 billion.
North Mole LNG Power Station
The North Mole LNG Power Station in Gibraltar is a state-of-the-art, low-emission power facility with a total capacity of 80 megawatts, built to replace the territory’s ageing diesel-powered plants and ensure cleaner, more reliable electricity generation. The project, which includes both the power station and an associated LNG storage and regasification terminal, was completed at an estimated total cost of around £112 million. At its peak, the construction phase employed approximately 150 workers, contributing significantly to the local economy and infrastructure development.
Eastside Coastal Protection Works
The Eastside Project in Gibraltar is a large-scale mixed-use development including around 2,600 residential units, a 300-room hotel, commercial spaces, and a marina. The project is expected to create over 3,000 jobs during construction and approximately 2,400 permanent jobs once operational. The total estimated value of the project is around £330 million, including a £90 million premium paid to the government.
